9-11-01 Lovingkindness & Compassion Meditation

May I be well, happy, safe, and harmonious.
May I experience lovingkindness, compassion, joy, and peace.

May my family and friends be well, happy, safe, and harmonious.
May they experience lovingkindness, compassion, joy, and peace.

May all persons I connect with be well, happy, safe, and harmonious.
May all persons I connect with experience lovingkindness, compassion, joy, and
peace.

May the victims and families of the 9/11 and other terrorist tragedies be well,
happy, safe, and harmonious.
May the victims and families of the 9/11 and the terrorist tragedies experience
lovingkindness, compassion, joy, and peace.

May all terrorists and their families be well, happy, safe, and harmonious.
May all terrorists and their families experience lovingkindness, compassion,
joy, and peace.

May all persons who suffer poverty, injustice, and oppression be well, happy,
safe, and harmonious.
May all persons who suffer poverty, injustice, and oppression experience
lovingkindness, compassion, joy, and peace.

May all beings be well, happy, safe, and harmonious.
May all beings experience lovingkindness, compassion, joy, and peace.

The above is the Lovingkindness and Compassion Meditation I led at our Des Moines Meditation and Mindfulness Group the evening of Tuesday, September 11, 2001. Then I said "today's tragedy" rather the "the 9/11."
I’m putting it here for use by anyone who might want to repeat it today or anytime soon, individually or in a group, on this anniversary of that tragic occasion when so many persons suffered and are still suffering.

As with any lovingkindness and compassion meditation, you may modify it and use any other words or phrases you prefer. In Buddhism the primary purpose of these meditations is to strengthen our own innate capacity to experience lovingkindness and compassion for ourselves and for everyone else, including our enemies and those whom we fear or distrust.
